Types of TV Sets

With so many choices it can be a daunting task to find the right TV for you. In the article below we help you understand the differences in TV types.

There are three main types of TV sets. They are LCD (which includes LED sets), plasma and OLED which is new, rare and very expensive at this time.

Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) TVs are the most common type of TV, especially at sizes under 40 inch. Arguments rage about whether it’s worse in terms of contrast and color than plasma but they have improved the past few years. With the better TVs you’d be hard-pressed to tell the difference with plasma. LCD sets tend to be slim and light, making them better for mounting on flimsier walls than heavier plasma sets.

Plasma TV displays don’t have a backlight. Instead, each pixel on the screen emits its own light. In the past, this has given plasma displays an advantage where contrast is concerned, since when a pixel is turned off, it’s completely black.

Conventional backlights in LCDs continue to emit light, even if the pixels are turned off. Plasma displays are typically heavier and more expensive than LCD TVs.

Plasma displays also have faster response times than LCD. It appeals to gamers although LCD is closing the gap in this area.

OLED technology is in its infancy but OLED is an exciting development. That’s because it uses a thin layer of organic molecules that emit light when a current is passed through them. Because it requires so little electricity and circuit bulk, the panels can be made incredibly thin.
